    AfroFutures2050: Contributor Policy & Ethical Framework

    1. Eligibility for Submission

    • Open to all individuals across Africa, or anyone who holds African citizenship or a valid African passport.
    • There are no restrictions on age, background, or professional status — everyone is welcome to contribute.

    2. Copyright & Licensing

    All submissions to AfroFutures2050 remain the full copyright of the original author. By submitting a story, you grant AfroFutures2050 a non-commercial, exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to:

    • Use, display, share, translate, and adapt your work for project-related purposes. This includes publishing on our platforms, exhibiting in showcases, using in workshops, and inclusion in non-commercial anthologies or educational resources.
    • Ensure that your work is always credited to you (Attribution / BY).
    • Share your work under the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, allowing others to remix and redistribute it under the same terms, for non-commercial purposes only.

    Should AfroFutures2050 or any of its partners wish to use your work for commercial purposes (e.g., in paid publications, merchandise, licensing deals, or branded campaigns), we will seek your explicit, prior written consent and ensure fair and transparent compensation, in line with our community-first values.

    This approach respects your intellectual property and moral rights, while allowing your work to contribute to a wider movement of open, African-centered storytelling.


    3. Editorial Rights

    • The AfroFutures2050 project team reserves the right to edit, adapt, or curate submitted stories for clarity, length, formatting, and suitability for publication or presentation.
    • Wherever possible, edits will be made in collaboration with the author, and no substantial changes to meaning or tone will be made without prior discussion.
    • This editorial process does not affect your ownership or attribution rights, as outlined in the Copyright & Licensing section.

    4. Withdrawal & Revocation

    • Once a story is submitted and formally accepted into the AfroFutures2050 project, authors may not withdraw their submission or revoke the licensing rights granted, as outlined in the Copyright & Licensing section.
    • This policy helps ensure the integrity and continuity of the collective body of work across exhibitions, anthologies, and educational use.

    5. Revenue, Profits & Reinvestment

    AfroFutures2050 operates as a mission-driven, non-profit initiative. Any funds generated through donations, sponsorships, book sales, or related activities are used exclusively to:

    • Cover operational and production costs
    • Fund community- and youth-led storytelling initiatives
    • Support social impact programs (e.g., feeding schemes for vulnerable children)
    • Invest in future project growth and access to creative opportunities

    All revenue is transparently reinvested into the AfroFutures2050 ecosystem.


    6. Contributor Recognition & Rewards

    While participation is currently voluntary, AfroFutures2050 is committed to respecting and celebrating contributors through:

    • Public author credits and profiles
    • Participation certificates
    • Event invitations and speaker opportunities (where possible)
    • Inclusion in showcases, exhibitions, and partner media

    As resources grow, we aim to introduce:

    • Honorariums for creative roles (facilitation, translation, performance)
    • Sponsored opportunities (residencies, travel, fellowships)
    • Revenue-sharing models for commercial anthologies or IP-based collaborations

    7. Governance & Collective Stewardship

    We’re committed to building AfroFutures2050 as an inclusive, accountable, and non-extractive movement. Future plans include:

    • A rotating advisory board made up of storytellers, chapter hosts, and creatives
    • A community-managed fund for reinvestment in creative education
    • The potential establishment of a foundation or trust to ensure long-term ethical governance

    Our vision is grounded in collaboration, fairness, and African knowledge-sharing traditions.


    8. Legal Considerations

    • AfroFutures2050 is not responsible for any legal disputes arising from submitted content, including issues of plagiarism, defamation, or infringement of third-party rights.
    • By submitting, contributors confirm that their work is original and does not violate the rights of others.
    • Any disputes or legal matters relating to submissions or participation in the project shall be governed under the laws of the Republic of South Africa.

    9. Privacy & Personal Information

    • Any personal information collected (such as names, contact details, or biographical data) will be used solely for communication and coordination related to the AfroFutures2050 project.
    • Your data will be kept confidential and will not be shared with third parties without your explicit consent.
    • We are committed to protecting contributors’ privacy and handling all personal data in a responsible and secure manner.

    Call for Chapters: AfroFutures 2050

    Shaping Africa’s Future Through Storytelling

    About AfroFutures 2050
    AfroFutures 2050 is a visionary storytelling initiative dedicated to capturing and shaping the future of Africa through the voices of its people. We believe that storytelling has the power to influence, inspire, and redefine the future. Through a collective effort, we aim to curate narratives that imagine Africa in 2050—its challenges, innovations, traditions, and transformations.

    To achieve this, we are seeking Chapters across Africa—local hubs that will facilitate storytelling workshops and help us collect authentic stories from diverse communities. We invite writers, facilitators, academics, historians, and community leaders to join us in this journey.


    What is a Chapter?
    A Chapter is a regional hub responsible for organizing and conducting storytelling workshops in its respective area. These workshops will gather stories that reflect unique African futures, showcasing a range of perspectives from grassroots communities to emerging leaders in various fields.

    Chapter Responsibilities:

    • Organize and run at least one storytelling workshop in your region.
    • Engage with local storytellers, writers, elders, artists, and youth to collect diverse narratives.
    • Document and submit the collected stories in line with AfroFutures 2050 guidelines.
    • Ensure ethical storytelling practices and community representation.
    • Promote AfroFutures 2050 through local networks and online platforms.

    Who Can Apply?

    We are looking for individuals, organizations, or groups who are:

    • Passionate about African storytelling and future-thinking.
    • Connected to local storytelling communities.
    • Committed to ethical storytelling and inclusive representation.

      • Your experience with storytelling, community engagement, or facilitation.
      • Your vision for the storytelling workshops.
      • Your proposed location and target participants.

    What is a Story?

    A story is a way to share an idea, experience, or vision.

    It can be:

    • A written text (max 1,500 words)
    • A verbal/audio story (MP4 format, max 3 minutes)

    What Makes a Great Afro Futures 2050 Story?

    • Original: Your own unique voice and perspective
    • Future-Focused: Imagining Africa in 2050 and beyond
    • Engaging: A narrative that connects with people

    How to Submit

    • Verbal stories: Upload as an MP4 file
    • Written stories: Upload as a Word or PDF file

    We welcome all languages and storytelling styles!

    In partnership with media, tech, and talent management companies, Africa Futures 2050 intends to spotlight stories and messages that propel a generation of dreamers into the STEM and arts fields that will define Africa’s path. 

    By participating as a submitter, you will help to sow the seeds of radical innovation, community empowerment, and vibrant storytelling that resonates far beyond 2050.

    All submitted stories are freely given to the Afrofutures community under the Creative Commons Licence (all creators will be credited for their contribution but relinquish copyright claims for the actual story submitted)

    All stories need to be a maximum of 3 Minutes or 1500words and can be submitted via pdf (text), mp3 (voice) or mp4 (video) or images.
