AfroFutures2050: Contributor Policy & Ethical Framework
1. Eligibility for Submission
- Open to all individuals across Africa, or anyone who holds African citizenship or a valid African passport.
- There are no restrictions on age, background, or professional status — everyone is welcome to contribute.
2. Copyright & Licensing
All submissions to AfroFutures2050 remain the full copyright of the original author. By submitting a story, you grant AfroFutures2050 a non-commercial, exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to:
- Use, display, share, translate, and adapt your work for project-related purposes. This includes publishing on our platforms, exhibiting in showcases, using in workshops, and inclusion in non-commercial anthologies or educational resources.
- Ensure that your work is always credited to you (Attribution / BY).
- Share your work under the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, allowing others to remix and redistribute it under the same terms, for non-commercial purposes only.
Should AfroFutures2050 or any of its partners wish to use your work for commercial purposes (e.g., in paid publications, merchandise, licensing deals, or branded campaigns), we will seek your explicit, prior written consent and ensure fair and transparent compensation, in line with our community-first values.
This approach respects your intellectual property and moral rights, while allowing your work to contribute to a wider movement of open, African-centered storytelling.
3. Editorial Rights
- The AfroFutures2050 project team reserves the right to edit, adapt, or curate submitted stories for clarity, length, formatting, and suitability for publication or presentation.
- Wherever possible, edits will be made in collaboration with the author, and no substantial changes to meaning or tone will be made without prior discussion.
- This editorial process does not affect your ownership or attribution rights, as outlined in the Copyright & Licensing section.
4. Withdrawal & Revocation
- Once a story is submitted and formally accepted into the AfroFutures2050 project, authors may not withdraw their submission or revoke the licensing rights granted, as outlined in the Copyright & Licensing section.
- This policy helps ensure the integrity and continuity of the collective body of work across exhibitions, anthologies, and educational use.
5. Revenue, Profits & Reinvestment
AfroFutures2050 operates as a mission-driven, non-profit initiative. Any funds generated through donations, sponsorships, book sales, or related activities are used exclusively to:
- Cover operational and production costs
- Fund community- and youth-led storytelling initiatives
- Support social impact programs (e.g., feeding schemes for vulnerable children)
- Invest in future project growth and access to creative opportunities
All revenue is transparently reinvested into the AfroFutures2050 ecosystem.
6. Contributor Recognition & Rewards
While participation is currently voluntary, AfroFutures2050 is committed to respecting and celebrating contributors through:
- Public author credits and profiles
- Participation certificates
- Event invitations and speaker opportunities (where possible)
- Inclusion in showcases, exhibitions, and partner media
As resources grow, we aim to introduce:
- Honorariums for creative roles (facilitation, translation, performance)
- Sponsored opportunities (residencies, travel, fellowships)
- Revenue-sharing models for commercial anthologies or IP-based collaborations
7. Governance & Collective Stewardship
We’re committed to building AfroFutures2050 as an inclusive, accountable, and non-extractive movement. Future plans include:
- A rotating advisory board made up of storytellers, chapter hosts, and creatives
- A community-managed fund for reinvestment in creative education
- The potential establishment of a foundation or trust to ensure long-term ethical governance
Our vision is grounded in collaboration, fairness, and African knowledge-sharing traditions.
8. Legal Considerations
- AfroFutures2050 is not responsible for any legal disputes arising from submitted content, including issues of plagiarism, defamation, or infringement of third-party rights.
- By submitting, contributors confirm that their work is original and does not violate the rights of others.
- Any disputes or legal matters relating to submissions or participation in the project shall be governed under the laws of the Republic of South Africa.
9. Privacy & Personal Information
- Any personal information collected (such as names, contact details, or biographical data) will be used solely for communication and coordination related to the AfroFutures2050 project.
- Your data will be kept confidential and will not be shared with third parties without your explicit consent.
- We are committed to protecting contributors’ privacy and handling all personal data in a responsible and secure manner.
